For today’s Census Sunday post, I would like to post about Lura Maude (McCormack) Palmer and her family in the 1930 census. Lura is my first cousin twice removed. She was the fifth child of Edward James and Elizabeth (Dimmick) McCormack. FYI, Edward died in 1898. Lura was 10th granddaughter of Michael and Catherine McCormack.
In April 1930, we find Lura Maude McCormack was married to Dudley Palmer and living in Big Creek Township. Big Creek township is located in Oscoda County, Michigan. Even today, Oscoda County is a fairly rural environment. It must have been even more so back in 1930. Lura married Dudley Palmer in May 1924.This is the portion of the census that we are most concerned about; They were enumerated on the 10th of Apr 1930. Dudley, Lura and Elizabeth were enumerated on lines 36, 37 and 38 respectively. The extracted information for the household is;
Line #, Street name, House #, dwelling #, family #, Name, Relation, Own/Rent, Value, Radio, house/farm, Sex, Color, Age, Martial Status, Age at 1st Marriage, Attended School in last year, read & write, Place of birth, Place of birth (Father), Place of birth (Mother), Native Language, Year of immigration, Naturalization, speak English, Occupation, Industry, Class of worker, Employed, Veteran, # of farm schedule

We really don’t learn much unexpected from this census. There is the fact that Lura was about 4 years older than her husband, but that isn’t too surprising. We see that Lura and Dudley have one child, a daughter named Elizabeth who was about 8 months old. M-72 & M-33 is an intersection of two local roads in Mio, Michigan. There is some additional writing for the location given for Lura and Dudley, but I couldn’t make it out. Lura and Dudley, it appears, don’t live too far from Dudley’s parents (lines 11 & 12).
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you learn something!
