For today’s Census Sunday post, I would like to post about my great grand-aunt Maria “Minnie” Bedina (McCormack) Barnes. In 1930, we find Minnie living alone in Flint, Michigan and apparently running a board house.This is the portion of the census that we are most concerned about; She was enumerated on the 11th of Apr 1930. The extracted information for the household is;
Line #, Street name, House #, dwelling #, family #, Name, Relation, Own/Rent, Value, Radio, house/farm, Sex, Color, Age, Martial Status, Age at 1st Marriage, Attended School in last year, read & write, Place of birth, Place of birth (Father), Place of birth (Mother), Native Language, Year of immigration, Naturalization, speak English, Occupation, Industry, Class of worker, Employed, Veteran
1. 60, Hamilton Str., 920, 271, 205, Minnie Barnes, Head, O(wned), 10000, -, -, F, W, 82*, Wd, 25, No, Yes, Michigan, Ireland (I.F.S.)**, England, -, -, -, Yes, None, Boarding House, -, -, -, -, –
Here are a few things that we learned from this census;
* – the transcription says that she is 82. I believe, if I have the right person, that the transcriber of this page made a mistake and that the age given should be 62.
** – I.F.S. I believe stands for Irish Free State.
It also states that Minnie is a widow. I believe that this “fact” is also wrong. She is also listed as a widow in the 1940 census. I have the death certificate for a Charles Barnes, whom I believe to be her ex-husband, who died in 1941.
Thanks for stopping by and I hoped you learned something.
