Census Sunday – Merle Hemingway McCormack and family in the 1930 Census

For today’s Census Sunday post, I would like to post about my grand-uncle Merle “Mac” Hemingway McCormack and his (1st) wife, Lois Muriel (Baker) McCormack. Merle was the first of William E. McCormack’s three children to leave the house. In 1930, Merle and his wife Lois, are living in Flint, Michigan. They both worked for Baker Business College  as instructors where Lois’s father Edwin was President and founder.

This is the portion of the census that we are most concerned about;

1930 Census Snippet [1]

They were enumerated on the 18th of Apr 1930. Merle, Lois and the maid, Florence were enumerated on lines 61, 62 and 63 respectively. The extracted information for the household is;

Line #, Street name, House #, dwelling #, family #, Name, Relation, Own/Rent, Value, Radio, house/farm, Sex, Color, Age, Martial Status, Age at 1st Marriage, Attended School in last year, read & write, Place of birth, Place of birth (Father), Place of birth (Mother), Native Language, Year of immigration, Naturalization, speak English, Occupation, Industry, Class of worker, Employed, Veteran

One of the things that we learn from this census is that Merle and Lois were in a position at the beginning of the Great Depression to hire a maid. The fact that they were able to hire a maid means that it is avenue of research in the future to see if Florence passed anything from her employment to her descendants if she had any. I thought it would be interesting to see the house that Uncle “Mac” first lived in. I think that this is the house. It does have the same address number;

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you learned something!
